What is ECHA Harmonized Classification?

The ECHA Harmonized Classification is an official and legally binding assessment of the hazards associated with a chemical substance.
Defined by the European Chemicals Agency, it is approved by the European Commission under the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).
Its purpose is to standardize the communication of chemical risks across the European Union.

This classification determines:

• Hazard classes (e.g., carcinogenic, corrosive, toxic)

• H-statements (Hazard Statements)

• Mandatory GHS pictograms

• Hazard and precautionary statements

When does the harmonized classification apply?

The harmonized classification applies only to specific hazardous substances included in Annex VI of the CLP Regulation.

It is mandatory for all:

• Manufacturers

• Importers

• Downstream users

If a substance does not have a harmonized classification, the company is required to assess and assign its own classification (self-classification), always following CLP criteria.
